When applied properly a cat can both be alive and dead at the same time.
Sometimes I wonder how Schrödinger and Heisenberg came up with this whole quantum mechanics business. Supposely Einstein, Schrödinger, and Heisenberg used to hang out in Christiana in Copenhagen…a well know spot for hippies. It’s rather scary how one single physic equation can change our world so much and so few people understand it. But again how many people understand how simple appliances like microwave, fridge work?

The cat doesn’t decide. By observation YOU are determining a state for the cat. The paradox of both states existing is broken by observation. Follows along with that whole thing about knowing a particle’s position and velocity vector. You can’t know both without affecting one or the other.
The particle/cat wasn’t really anywhere before the measurement. It is the act of measurement that forces the particle/cat to “take a stand.”
